November 2-6

ELA   Social Studies        MathScience
We will be continuing our "Swallowing Stones" novel study.

By the end of the week, students should be complete:
-Reading Chapters 1-20
-Finished the three sections of bookwork (Ch 1-5, Ch 6-10, Ch 11-15)

All resources for this unit are posted on Google Classroom at the top of the  "Classwork" page, including:
-Digital workbook
-Audiobook
-Unit calendar 
Students will be working on a research project about the YCJA. They will need technology all week to work on this. 

They will be presenting a 1-minute speech at the end of this project. 

All materials for this project are in students' Justice booklets, and also are posted on Google Classroom. 
This week we will continue to work on finding the surface area of composite shape.

At this time we should have a good understanding of overlap and calculating the overlap.

This week we will solve problems related to real world scenarios and increased complexity for example: finding the surface area of a shape with a hole.

In preparation for Remembrance Day next week, poppies are now for sale by donation in the office. Students are invited to bring in donations of any amount to "purchase" a poppy. If you would like to donate online instead, you can do so by going to www.poppyboxabnwt.com, or text POPPY4YYC. All online donations go to the same Calgary Branches Poppy Fund that the cash donations go to.

We are working on our "Swallowing Stones" novel study all week. 

Work that should complete by the end of the week:

-Read Chapters 1-10
-Complete the bookwork for Ch 1-5, and Ch 6-10

All materials for this novel study are posted on Google Classroom, including:

-Audiobook
-Unit calendar
We are continuing our Justice unit. 

Work that should be complete by the end of the week:
-Political cartoons analysis
-Notes on Juries, Advocacy Groups, and Sentencing Circles
-Beginning a research project about the YCJA

All this work can be found in the Justice booklet. There is a digital version of thsi booklet, plus all videos and Powerpoints needed for the unit, posted on Google Classroom. 
We are continuing Surface Area of Composite shapes.

Unit Assessment will be November 9th.

We will be working to wrap up the Biodiversity unit this week. To include:

-continuous vs discrete variation

-nature vs nurture

-twin studies

-GMOs

-natural/artificial selection

-extinction/extirpation

-human activities and their effect on biodiversity

 

Students are strongly encouraged to bring their phones to class & headphones if they have them to support their research & coursework.

 

Heading in to the weekend, students will be tasked with researching sources both for and against genetically modified organisms.

That Was Then, This Is Now project due Thursday, Oct. 15

We will be doing a mini film study to introduce our Justice unit. 

Students will watch a documentary in class and complete a short booklet in connection with that. 

All students should have the booklet completed, and also post a response on Google Classroom by the end of the week. 

The booklet and film will be available on Google Classroom. 
We are introducing our Justice unit. Students will receive a Justice booklet that they will be working in the entire unit. 

Activities we will complete in the booklet this week are:
-Fill out frayer model and annotate
Lady Justice symbol
-Fill in vocabulary
-Attitudinal survey




The booklet will be available on Google Classroom. 
Circle Geometry Unit Assessment is on TUESDAY Oct. 20th.

Wednesday,  Thursday & Friday: Intro to  Composite Shapes (finding surface area)


Working on genetics vocabulary and the inheritance of genes.  Course notes are posted on Google Classroom.

Working on genetics problems—Sponge Bob genetics & genetics practice problems

*These will be posted on Google Classroom along with the answer keys

 

Looking ahead, students should be preparing a Science quiz on Oct 22.  They will need to organize a study schedule as they have a Math test on Circle Geometry on Tues Oct 20th.  A study guide will be posted on google classroom before the weekend.
