November 30 - December 4

  

ELA   Social Studies        MathScience
Students will be planning and writing our first School Wide Write (taking place on Tuesday, Dec. 1).

Students have a choice to write about one of three topics: Resiliency, the Importance of Following Rules, or Optimism. They will have planning time during their HUM period. 

Students must complete this writing assignment and submit it on Google Classroom by 3:00pm on Tuesday, Dec. 1. 

Students have a "Simplifying the Charter" project due this week (varying due dates between Monday-Wednesday, depending on the class). 

They will also be doing an annotation and discussion about an article about the Canadian Charter in the workplace. 

They will end the week by beginning Chapter 4: Collective Rights. This will involve some notes and textbook work. 

All notes and lessons are posted on Google Classroom.


Please note: 
  • As stated by the new set of public heath measures announced by Premier Jason Kenney on Tuesday, Nov. 24, all HDC students will move to at-home learning starting Monday, Nov. 30 to Friday, Jan. 8 (except during winter break). Classes will be held through Google Meets. In-person classes will resume starting Monday, Jan. 11, 2021. 
  • Friday, Dec. 4 is a PD Day, so there will be NO online classes or posted lessons. Students are still welcome to email their teachers that day.

Students will be wrapping up their Swallowing Stones novel study with a one-pager final assignment. They will be doing a presentation in connection with this assignment. 

The assignment instructions, planning page, and the digital template are all posted on Google Classroom. 
Students will be watching a documentary about human rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. 

They will then be starting a project that involves simplifying the Charter and representing it in a manner of their choosing. 

The documentary, and the resources for the Charter project will all be posted on Google Classroom. 
This week we will continue to our work with Rational Numbers: Operations with Fractions and begin converting fractions to decimals later this week. 

Check D2L for the daily assignments.
This week there will be continued exploration of chemical and physical change.

Also diving into the difference between chemical and physically properties.

November 16-20

Students will be finishing the last chapter section of "Swallowing Stones," Ch. 21-25. This work includes:
-Vocab
-Reading
-Book work

They will also be starting work on the final project for this unit - a "One Pager" assignment.

Students are starting a new unit in Social Studies: The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Ch. 3)

This week we will be completing:
-A discussion and intro notes about the Charter
-An "Eye Spy" activity (finding specific rights in the Charter)
-Take notes on specific human rights and citizen responsibilities

This week we continue to work on our Rational Numbers Unit.

We are focusing on operations with fractions, including negative fractions. 

See D2L for review of Operations with Fractions, Decimals and Integers. And new assignments as we go.
This week students will begin their new unit by classifying matter as well as identifying chemical and physical properties of a substance.

This will also include a lab in school and some weekend online homework.

Thursday, Nov. 19 will be a half-day (12:00pm dismissal), and there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, Nov. 20. This is due to our Student Progress Conferences taking place those days. Bookings for these conferences open Saturday, Nov. 14 at 8:00am. Please check your Weekly Message from Mr. Klukas for more details.

We will be continuing our "Swallowing Stones" novel study.

By the end of the week, students should be complete:
-Reading Chapters 1-20
-Finished the four sections of bookwork (Ch 1-5, Ch 6-10, Ch 11-15, Ch 16-20)

-Digital workbook
-Audiobook
-Unit calendar 
Justice Unit Test on Thursday, Nov. 12th 

Students will be presenting 1-minute speeches about the YCJA on Monday, Nov. 9. 

Some class time will be given for review. 

Study resources are posted on Google Classroom. 
Monday Nov. 9th is the Unit test for Composite Shapes for most of Grade 9.

This week we will also start the Rational Numbers Unit. This unit requires students to solve problems with fractions, decimals and integers combined.

We will start by reviewing adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with integers. 

Note: 901 will write their Composite Shapes Unit Exam on Thursday. 
This week we will be beginning the new unit!

Matter and Chemical Change. Think of this as your chemistry unit.

We will begin the week with Lab safety and procedure.

There is NO SCHOOL on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in honour of Remembrance Day. HDC's Remembrance Day virtual ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Students are invited to bring in donations of any amount to "purchase" a poppy in their homerooms. If you would like to donate online instead, you can do so by going to www.poppyboxabnwt.com, or text POPPY4YYC. All online donations go to the same Calgary Branches Poppy Fund that the cash donations go to.
